Problems posting comments?

—srikanth @ 09:57

Some of you are facing a lot of trouble with posting comments. They just don’t show up after you post them.

This is definitely a problem on the site, and we’re working to fix this ASAP! Till then, if your post doesn’t show up, please do mail us at boiledbeans[at]gmail[dot]com. We have a way of recovering them from that great /dev/null in the sky, and we will post them up here.

For all of you who’ve lost comments on the past couple of questions, we’re recovering those too. And we’ll be adding them to your scores if you got them right.

Sorry for all the trouble, but this blog, like the tech industry, seems to be governed by Murphy’s law.

Update:
We think we’ve fixed the problem. All your comments (including the older ones) should be showing up properly now. Apologies for the mess, and thanks a lot for putting up with it :-)

  1. Is a painting by William Blake. Its called Newton.
  2. Dispersion of white light through a prism. One of the many things Newton discovered.
  3. Apple’s Newton PDA/message pad. Its name is a tribute to Sir Issac Newton.

So, like all of you have guessed, the connect is Sir Issac Newton.

The fourth E above middle C

—srikanth @ 10:31

This activity was once a very popular pastime of the poor and the nerdy.

Some who did it became famous,

72705ca9c6e6fa0cff15920fc91021ca.jpg

while some became infamous:
3b04480123e84767d701506ba2205106.jpg

In fact, it became quite a significant cultural phenomenon, managing to get references in Hollywood:
5f773283dd8cb014310feb258b2e1a2b.jpg

What activity is this that became a “classic” pastime? Who’re all these guys? (The pictures are full of clues )

Partially cracked by: Biki , srichand , Goutham , Mighty Anon , jayanth , shivani , Poornima , and Gammafunction. I’m feeling generous again.

The complete answer I was looking for:

  1. Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak. They spent their formative years making Blue Boxes (see link).
  2. Kevin Mitnick - The infamous “homeless hacker” started his hacking career through Phreaking.
  3. Scene from the movie “Sneakers” where the character called Whistler is seen holding a Cap’n crunch box. Toy whistles found in Cap’n crunch boxes were used to generate the 2600 Hz tone (see question title) to phreak Ma bell’s phone networks. No one seemed to identify the movie.

The connect: Phreaking.

  2. NLS - the first system which used video conferencing, hypertext, computer mouses (mice?) and all the other extremely brilliant things Engelbart and team came up with

This demo was so brilliant that people started referring to it as “The Mother of all Demos “

2ndratequizzer got close.

The answer is nmap, a port scanning tool which can be downloaded from insecure.org. Typically, it is used by hackers (ethical or otherwise) to first find out which ports on a target machine are open.

  1. Featured the Source code of nmap

  2. Trinity in Matrix Reloaded using nmap to port scan and attack the “Grid System” using a well known attack called SSH1-CRC to gain access. This was even featured in a BBC news article. This is also the first Hollywood movie to show a proper hacking scene.

  3. Many people claim to have seen nmap in action in this movie. Screen shots are available all around the net.

Bluetooth was named after a late tenth century king, Harald Bluetooth King of Denmark and Norway. He is known for his unification of previously warring tribes from Denmark (including now Swedish Scania, where the Bluetooth technology was invented), and Norway. Bluetooth likewise was intended to unify different technologies, such as computers and mobile phones.

This question, which kind of looked hard, was easily workable when approached from pic 3 to 1

  1. Don Knuth’s Metafont whose version numbers approach e. The versions are 2, 2.7, 2.71, 2.718 and so on

  2. Google in their 2004 IPO announced its intention to raise $2,718,281,828, which is e billion dollars. Also they had hiring billboards with references to e.

  3. Andrew Jackson, he was a US president, 2 times in office, 7th president and was elected in 1828. Which perfectly fits into 2.71828, which is the value of e!
